iMovie Skillshop & Manual Each intern was given the opportunity to lead a skillshop of their choice. I chose to give a skillshop on how to edit using iMovie. While I do not own a Mac or use iMovie regularly, many students do and iMovie offers a great layout for first time video editors. The main difficulty in preparing the skillshop revolved around figuring out how much content would be too much or too little to teach about. The manual provides first time iMovie users with a brief overview of how to get started. For more extensive tips and techniques, we encourage users to use Apple’s easy to use guide at https://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.1/
Beat Goes On This video was part of my final project for the Art and Place photography course led by Nicole Hill. The video consists of video clips and photographs I took at the Bayshore Mall as well as a commercial for the mall that aired in the 80’s. I chose to edit the video using Camtasia because one has the ability to manually change the opacity of your image and overlay multiple clips at once, giving the video a multi-exposure element. In this way I remixed the old Bayshore Mall commercial as if it was being projected onto a wall itself. This was my first time using Camtasia and found it very easy to use. I wish Camtasia had specific features that iMovie offers while I wish iMovie offered the features specific to Camtasia. In the end, it is easiest to choose which editing software to use when you have an idea about how you want your final project to look.
Environmental Studies Community Partner Celebration Flyer Having attended an introductory skillshop on how to use InDesign, I volunteered to create a flyer for our Environmental Studies Community Partner night. It was a bit difficult to begin the flyer because I did not have much of an idea of how I wanted the flyer to look. InDesign offers a blank template to begin which can be a bit daunting. I also had to export the flyer as a .jpg instead of pdf because certain elements were not appearing when exported as pdf. Looking back, it would have been much easier to use a website like Canva.
Salton Sea Student Resources For the past two semesters I have been conducting research on the environmental justice issues at the Salton Sea. My analysis of the issue comes from analyzing a wide range of media surrounding the various issues. From newspaper articles, Youtube videos, public meeting notes and State issued reports, the contents to understanding the issues vary greatly yet are essential to grasping the scope of the issues. To encourage further research from students I began a website that archives videos, newspaper articles and public documents. This is a living resource that I will continue to update as my studies go on.
A challenge to creating the website has been finding the best way to organize the information in a concise way that encourages users to explore the topic. Newspaper articles have been organized by year to document the slow progress the State has made while also providing a space for users to stay updated on the issues.
